A corrosion-inhibitor claim is a claim about evidence
Which parts of an inhibitor claim you can actually read, which sit behind a paywall, and how to record the difference.
Sort the claim into three layers
A corrosion-inhibitor claim usually arrives as one sentence, and it is doing three jobs at once. The first layer is composition: which additives, at what concentration. The second is test evidence: which bench or loop test, on which metal coupons, for how long, with what acceptance criterion. The third is service evidence: how the fluid behaved in a real system, for how long, under whose monitoring. Ask which layer a given statement belongs to before deciding what it proves.
Composition is frequently proprietary, and a supplier declining to disclose it is not by itself a defect in the evidence. What matters is whether the supplier will state, for the exact product being quoted, which metals the package is formulated to protect, what dilution water it requires, and what the manufacturer’s own monitoring and replenishment guidance says. Record any of those that come back as “not available.”
Say plainly which documents you could not read
The recognised bench methods for coolant corrosion testing are consensus standards published by ASTM, and their full text is sold rather than published. We did not read them for this guide, and we do not paraphrase requirements from documents we have not read. If a supplier cites a test method, the useful follow-up is to ask for the report — the coupon metals, the duration, the temperature, the fluid concentration and the pass criterion — rather than to accept the designation as though it were a result.
The same discipline applies to your own file. NIST describes metrological traceability as a property of a measurement result: a documented unbroken chain of calibrations, a clearly defined property, a full description of the measurement system, a stated value with a documented uncertainty evaluation, and a complete specification of the reference at the time of comparison. Where one of those elements is absent from a corrosion or fluid-condition report, note that it is absent. An undocumented result can still be informative; it should not be filed as though it were traceable.
Bind the claim to the system it has to survive
UFC 3-410-01 couples inhibitor degradation to glycol concentration and instructs designers to coordinate that with the manufacturer. It also requires, in its addition to IMC §1207.2, that systems using an antifreeze solution such as glycol be given “a feed system appropriate for the transfer fluid.” Both are reminders that a protection claim is conditional on how the fluid is diluted, fed and maintained, and that those conditions belong in the same record as the claim.
Wetted materials belong there too, including the ones nobody lists: seals, hoses, pump internals, the makeup-water connection and the heat exchanger. The Hazardous Substances Data Bank entry for propylene glycol notes that the material can be stored in stainless steel, aluminium and lined steel, and that carbon steel is also acceptable “although slight iron contamination” may result. That is a statement about the neat chemical in a storage vessel, not about a diluted, inhibited, circulating system at temperature; treat it as a reason to ask the question, never as the answer.
- Which metals is the package formulated to protect, and which of them are actually in this loop?
- What dilution-water quality does the manufacturer require, and has anyone measured the site water against it?
- What monitoring does the manufacturer specify, at what interval, against which limits?
- Which elements of the supporting report are missing, and who is chasing them?
